UTAS Visiting Artist Series
Warren Lee with The Diemen Quartet
Conservatorium Recital Hall, Hobart

Hong Kong based pianist Warren Lee concluded two weeks as visiting artist in residence with this concert. In the first part of the program he performed works by four composers, exhibiting both technical prowess and deeply musical instincts.

The Bach-Busoni Chaconne was structually rigorous, controlled and powerful, leaving no doubt about the player's mastery. Lightness of touch and stylistic awareness created the fullest contrast for Haydn's Sonata in E major, Hob. XVI/31.

Appropriately, a more romantically flexible approach was deployed for Chopin's Ballade No. 4 in F minor, Op.52. Lee concluded with an atmospheric rendition of Debussy's "La fille aux cheveux de lin" from the set of Preludes Book 1.

The remainder of the program was devoted to a joyous performance of Schumann's Piano Quintet in E flat major, Op.44. The Diemen Quartet was in fine fettle, with cellist Jane Tallon standing in for Bredan Conroy, who is overseas. The scherzo and finale were wonderfully buoyant and exhilarating.
